Seminar abstract:
Perceived self-efficacy is a powerful operative construct that refers to one’s capability to master challenging tasks in the future. The development of self-efficacy scales enabled the study of the construct and laid the basis for further research in self-efficacy across context. Its eminent role in behavior change programs, with a focus on the study of the phenomenon over time, its assessment, change, as well as application, will be discussed.

Building on earlier works in general self-efficacy, the construct has become an essential part of behavior change. In particular, the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) highlights a distinction between three stages of change in which the self-efficacy operates differently: pre-action task self-efficacy, coping (or maintenance) self-efficacy, and recovery self-efficacy. This process-based distinction has implications for its assessment and study. Measurement examples that were applied in various intervention settings, including digital interventions, that target physical activity, dietary changes, and alcohol consumption will be provided.

Convergent and discriminant validity has been examined using multiphase-multibehavior structural equation models. In terms of self-efficacy changes, it has been found frequently that scores do not improve during treatment along with behavioral improvements, and possible reasons for this phenomenon will be discussed.
