Competence Workshops

Practice competence is an essential component of good social work practice for people with diverse social and psychological needs. At the Department of Social Work and Social Administration, The University of Hong Kong, we aim at equipping students with good and solid foundation in evidence-informed knowledge and skills for social work practice in a variety of human service settings. As one of our initiatives, we are organizing a series of workshops to further enhance our graduating students and alumni with social work practice skills. The major purposes of these workshops include: (1) to enhance our MSW and BSW students with social work practice competence and to better prepare them for real-life practice; (2) to highlight the expertise of our colleagues in evidence-based social work practice; and (3) to provide continuous support to our alumni with practice related training.

In accordance with our fine tradition and thanks to the generous support from colleagues in our Department, we have been running practice related skills workshops employing the expertise of our colleagues.  These workshops cover issues including those related to children and youth, death and dying, gerontology, health and mental health, social administration and etc; and clinical intervention approaches such as Body-Mind-Spirit Intervention, Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy and Emotion-Focused Therapy.

To conclude, this initiative would not have been eventuated without the active and cooperative teamwork among our core members including Professor Amy Chow and Prof. Celia Chan. For further enquiry, please contact at swsa@hku.hk or 3917 2288.

Series of Workshops

With the successful experience in offering social work competency training workshops to our past social work students, the Department is going to organize a series of core and elective social work competence trainings so as to further better equip you to take up the social work profession after graduation.

These series of training include 3 core courses and other elective courses for you to attend. These courses are run on a voluntary basis. In light of the current development of the pandemic, the 3 core courses from Feb to April will be conducted in Zoom.

There will be around 5-6 elective courses offered by various teaching colleagues from May to July, 2022 and you are allowed to select two out of 5-6 elective courses.

Placement hours will only be counted when students get the support and approval from fieldwork supervisors as part of the study leave allowance (5% of the placement hours) for attending any of these core courses, and a final Certificate of Attendance will be issued to students who have completed all 3 core and 2 elective training courses.

Students' Feedback from Previous Workshops

Resolving Interpersonal Conflicts in the Family Context

The video demonstration illustrates the application of skills very clearly.  Also, thanks for having four teachers being responsible for the workshop and stay for the whole day. Many suggestions and insights from the teachers.

I understand more about the underlying needs and interest behind the presenting problems and the positions. I would have the mindset to find the common ground between the clients. I would also use the engagement skills more structurally when the first meeting with the client and their family members.

Suicide Assessment and Crisis Intervention Skills

I understand how to handle clients with suicidal ideation. I also gained knowledge regarding the follow up work after clients committed suicide, as a school social worker.

Practice makes perfect. I believe that knowledge and skills are important but experience is also very practical for learning.  I will try to remember the skills and apply to the future practice in crisis management.

Emotion Management Skills

I have learnt how to identify negative automatic thoughts and dysfunctional rules of my clients and guide them to see other possibilities

The live demonstration is very useful for students to learn the skills.
