Applicants shall have a good honours degree from HKU or an equivalent qualification from comparable institutions. Those with qualifications other than an honours degree will be considered on their individual merits. Qualifying examinations to test the applicants' abilities to follow the prescribed courses and/or interviews may be conducted. Applicants with qualifications from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong where the language of teaching or examination is not English are required (unless exceptionally exempted) to obtain:

  • a score of 550 or above (paper-based test) or 80 or above (internet-based test) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
  • a minimum overall band of 6.5 with no subtest lower than 5.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
  • grade C or above in either the Overseas General Certificate of Education, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, or the Cambridge Test of Proficiency in English Language.

For local applicants, the submission method of supporting documents has been changed due to the uncertain conditions. If you have not submitted the required documents to us, please submit the following documents to the Department of Social Work and Social Administration by post or in person on or before November 25, 2019. Your application number should be marked on each document.

For overseas applicants, please post the following documents directly to the Department of Social Work and Social Administration, Room 534, 5/F, The Jockey Club Tower, Centennial Campus, The University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam Road, Hong Kong (Please mark “MSW – Ref (2020-21)” on the envelope) within one week.

  • Public Examination Results (e.g. HKALE/HKDSE, NJCEE, IB, SAT/AP, GCE-AL, etc) (certified true copy)
  • Complete official transcript of undergraduate studies (original / certified true copy*)

* Please note that the University will only ACCEPT originals or copies of the documents that have been duly declared as true copies before a notary public (e.g. a Commissioner for Oaths at a District Office in Hong Kong).  Copies of documents may be certified by the appropriate officials of your home institute if you are an overseas applicant.  No photocopies will be accepted.

Shortlisted applicants will be informed by email in due course.

2-year full-time mode
  • HK$114,700 per annum for local students
  • HK$136,500 per annum for non-local students
3-year part-time mode
  • HK$76,500 per annum for local students

Are you a local or non-local student?

  • If you require a student visa / entry permit issued by the Director of Immigration to study in Hong Kong, you will be regarded as a non-local applicant.
  • All visitors who do not have a right of abode in Hong Kong are required to apply for a student visa. The general rule is that if you are not in possession of a "Permanent Hong Kong Identity Card" (as distinguished from a "Hong Kong Identity Card"), you have to apply for a HKSAR student visa for the purpose of education.

1. Are photocopies of certificates and transcripts acceptable to the University?
Please submit the certified true copies of certificates and complete official transcripts of your undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Documents not in English should be accompanied by an officially certified translation into English, normally by the Registry of the awarding institution. At the application stage, a photocopy of the required documents is acceptable. Successful applicants will be requested to submit the original or officially certified documents before a firm offer is given. Please DO NOT submit the original copies of certificates.
2. What does “ certified true copy” mean?
A photocopy of the original document that has been duly declared as a true copy before a notary public (e.g. a Commissioner for Oaths at a District Office in Hong Kong民政事務處) (Please click here for details on making declarations of your documents at the District Offices). If you are an overseas applicant, copies of documents may be certified by the appropriate officials of your home institute.
3. Can I apply both Full-time and Part-time of MSW programme?
Yes, candidates should submit an online application and pay the application fee online for each study mode. The required supporting documents can be submitted once but please mark both application numbers on each document.
4. Am I eligible to apply for the MSW programme if I am in the final year of undergraduate studies?
Applicants who are in their final year of undergraduate studies should submit us with a certified photocopy of their available results by hands when you are invited to the written test assessment. Successful candidates will be given a conditional offer and required to submit an official transcript soon after the result of the final degree examination is known, and in any case no later than 31 July.
