Children and Youth Online Safety Programme

Invitation to Participate in the “Children and Youth Online Safety Programme” -Phase 2

Based on recent reports published by UNICEF, WHO and other child related organizations, increases in online activity may support children’s learning, socialization and play, but can also put them at greater risk of online harm such as sexual exploitation and cyber bullying. According to these recent findings, children who are vulnerable offline are also more likely to be vulnerable online. Also, children who experience one kind of online risk are also more likely to experience others.

Did I know that students are exposed to online risk every single day?

In Hong Kong, the number of online crimes is rising every year and the age of victims is getting younger. It is believed that with increasing amounts of time spent online, children and youth are at greater risk for online victimization.

Am I still doing nothing for them?

UNICEF is undertaking a project named “Global kids online.” The study has been conducted in over 14 countries around the world. We are happy to be launching it in Hong Kong. To provide your children and youth with knowledge of techniques and rules to keep themselves safe online, we are inviting schools that care about the online safety of their students to join this study. The programme consists of FOUR parts: (1) a survey; (2) focus groups, (3) a school talk; and (4) an individualized school report on study findings about your students.

If your school joins this study, the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at the University of Hong Kong, will offer a complementary educational talk about online safety for your students and teachers. Once the data have been collected and analyzed, the research team will also provide you with a complementary detailed confidential report of the findings tailored to the characteristics of and risks to students in your school.

Students in your schools will be asked to complete a global e-questionnaire or paper-and-pencil survey about their online habits. To thank the students who participate in the survey, they will be provided with cash vouchers and a chance to join the lucky draw.

If you are interested or have any questions regarding this program, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Clifton Emery (cemery@hku.hk) with the contact information below or email to ( stevek16@hku.hk) to reach our research team. Once again, we recognize that your time is precious. The benefits of participating in this project include a free presentation on online safety to your students, a confidential individualized report for your school, vouchers and an individualized report for parents tailored to their child. The costs include a little time and administrative effort. However, we do think that the benefits of participation in this program greatly outweigh the costs and hope that you will agree. We are looking forward to hearing from you. This study has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) (EA1701027)

Sincerely,
