I have been working as a frontline social worker for years, and I begin taking up a middle-management role. Yet, I have never been equipped with comprehensive management knowledge. This program has enabled me to network with other students from different professional backgrounds. With the sharing from and discussion with peers, I could grasp a holistic picture in the social service industry. This program design is very holistic.
The programme is very helpful and the learning is fruitful. The curriculum is well structured and the lectures are well prepared and qualified for the teaching. Mutual learning from other classmates through group projects is joyful.
The programme not only equip me with the knowledge and acquire skills, but also brings me new insights, sharpen my analytical skills and broaden my vision through communicating with professionals from the NGO sector, all these are important elements for my career development to be a more professional and up-to-the-time CSR practitioner.
Graduated from the law school and having served as a public administrator for eight years, I have always wanted to join the welfare sector for more society-related work. The MSS(SSM) provides a wide range of management-related modules tailored for managers in the social welfare sector and taught by teachers who are mostly veteran professionals in the field, equipping students with the knowledge and horizon essential for tackling future challenges in the fast-changing social sector.
With confidence on managing social service organisations as a result of completing the programme, I have made a bold career change and joined a local NGO as a member of the management. As a graduate of MSS(SSM), I have a strong feeling that the knowledge and attitude taught in the programme as well as the network acquired are useful for future leaders of the social welfare sector.
As a supervisor of several team at the centre, the course not only gave me much insights and vision, but also to my colleagues. Most of my colleagues were eager to listen my sharing of learning, they think those framework and theories would much help them in better service delivery and evaluation.
I am impressed by professors, classmates and many prestigious speakers who truly broadened my perspective of running a non-profit-making organization as part of the top management. Courses are discipline-specific and advanced with skills training like critical thinking, analytic ability, and time management.
The profession requires a strategic and analytical mindset and the integration of knowledge from various related disciplines. I find the MSocSc program in SSM of HKU is a good platform of relevant knowledge and skills and for me to pursue professional development.
The program is a jumping board of my career path. It equips me with management awareness, skillset, qualification, and interpersonal network for further career development.
The programme has changed my views on how the social welfare in Hong Kong should operate and provide me insight into how the function and roles of a manager need to change.
