Abstracts:

Prof. FILELDING – Covid-19 has brought to focus the roles psychology plays in infectious diseases, and many papers are now appearing that report studies of various aspects of behaviours related to reducing infection risk, or adaptation to different behavioural norms. This work is important and has kickstarted a much wider interest in this area of psychology. Having worked in a School of Public Health as a psychologist, my own work with infectious diseases began over 20 years ago with HIV-AIDS prevention and from there moved to respiratory infectious diseases with the advent of SARS in 2003. Since then the work has grown to encompass a wider range of interests in the psychology of communicable diseases and antimicrobial resistance.

Prof. HAN – In the presentation, I will share with HK colleagues about activities that CPS initiated from the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in this January up to now. In the 1st phase, CPS focus on training clinical psychologists to improve their competences in copying with the pandemic. In the meantime, a nation-wide ‘Peace mind project’ was announced for recruiting volunteers – in total more than 4000 individuals (from about 425 institutions) participated in providing psychological supports to those in need, especially front line workers (medical staff, policemen, etc). Sustainable cooperative team (including other professionals and governmental officials) and mechanism have been developed for the future. General outcomes of psychological supports and current focus will also be mentioned.

Should you have any inquiry, please contact HKPS Secretary at Mr. Joe NGAI, PhD candidate, at (joe.tkngai@hku.hk). Thank you.
