Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply both Full-time and Part-time of MSW programme?

Yes, candidates should submit an online application and pay the application fee online for each study mode. The required supporting documents can be submitted once but please mark both application numbers on each document.

Am I eligible to apply for the MSW programme if I am in the final year of undergraduate studies?

Yes, students who expect to complete the Bachelor’s degree programme by July 1, 2024 and graduate in 2024 may apply for admission. Applicants who are in their final year of undergraduate studies should submit us with a certified true copy of their latest transcript by post or in-person when you are invited to the written test assessment. Successful candidates will be given a conditional offer and be required to submit the original/ certified true copy of the official final transcript before document submission deadline.

Can the potential candidate apply for the programme if he/she is currently studying for a postgraduate degree in HKU or other institutions?

According to the HKU General Qualifications for Admissions, concurrent registration by a student of this University for another postsecondary qualification either at this University or at another institution is not permitted, unless approval of the Senate has been obtained in advance.

Is there any preferred academic or professional background for applicants?

Students from all backgrounds are welcome for application.

Can non-local student apply for part-time mode of study?

You may apply for the part-time mode for study, however please note that the student visa is only be offered for Part-time UGC programme students (MSW is a non-UGC programme). Please ensure that you are holding a valid visa with coverage of 3 years or above for application.

How to apply for Master of Social Work?

My certificates are in Chinese, can I submit as supporting document?

Documents not in English should be accompanied by an officially certified translation into English, normally by the Registry of the awarding institution.

Are photocopies of certificates and transcripts acceptable to the University?

Please submit the certified true copies of certificates and complete official transcripts of your undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Documents not in English should be accompanied by an officially certified translation into English, normally by the Registry of the awarding institution.

At the application stage, a photocopy of the required documents is acceptable. Successful applicants will be requested to submit the original or officially certified documents before a firm offer is given. Please DO NOT submit the original copies of certificates.

What does “Certified true copy” mean?

A photocopy of the original document that has been duly declared as a true copy before a notary public (e.g. a Commissioner for Oaths at a District Office in Hong Kong民政事務處) (Please click here for details on making declarations of your documents at the District Offices). Declaration before a notary public, the applicant(s) should submit the whole set of documents that has completed declaration including the cover page with the below wordings.

English: Exhibits “documents number” to “documents number” is/are the certified true copies of original documents held by me

Chinese: 附件編號 xx  xx 是本人持有文件正本的真確副本

(without declaration cover page/not submitting the whole set of declared documents/declaration cover page without the above wordings might not be accepted by the Registry of the University.)

If you are an overseas applicant, copies of documents may be certified by the appropriate officials of your home institute.

How to submit the referee forms?

Fill in your referee details in the ”Referee” section. An email invitation would be sent to the referee with a hyperlink. Please remind your referee to submit the referee forms before the deadline assigned.

Is there any requirement for English level?

Students who wish to be admitted with qualification from institution outside Hong Kong which language medium is not English are required to obtain:

  • A score of 550 or above (paper-based test) or 80 or above (internet-based test) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) TOEFL IBT® Home Edition test is not accepted; or
  • A minimum overall band of 6.5 with no subtest lower than 5.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) IELTS online test is not accepted; or
  • Grade C or above in either the Overseas General Certificate of Education, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, or the Cambridge Test of Proficiency in English Language.

Please note TOEFL and IELTS score reports are valid for two years only. For example, if you submit your application form on Oct 7, 2022, then only the report of the TOEFL/IELTS test taken after Oct 6, 2020 is considered valid.

For other students, you are also welcome to hand in your English qualification report for our consideration.

Should I provide my working experiences or voluntary work references for application?

Students are welcome to provide your working and voluntary work experiences for our references, however please note this is not a must for document submission.

Is it a must to provide a personal statement?

Yes, you may wish to state your reason of choosing the programme and any other information you would like to share with the Selection Panel. The personal statement is to show your background and passionate about the field which would also be part of the marking criteria.

For applicants from Mainland, do I need to hand in Online Verification Report?

Yes, you need to prepare Online Verification Report of Higher Education Qualification Certificate (教育部學歷證書電子註冊備案表) issued by CHSI (學信網) / CHESICC (全國高等學校學生資訊諮詢與就業指導中心) in both Chinese and English, and set the validity period of the report as 6 months or the longest available. 

Chinese version and English translation of the above documents certified by your home institution bearing official stamps or declared as true copies before a notary public (公證處).

How will the interview be carried out?

The interview would be carried out as face-to-face for local students, and Zoom for overseas applicants. For local applicants, please be advised that you are required for a valid vaccination pass to attend the interview or written test held in HKU premises.

Please attend the interviews according to the designated time. Change in interview date and time will not be allowed.

When can I get the admission result?

Successful applicants will receive our notification before July 31, 2023. If you do not receive the notification before the said date, you may assume the application be unsuccessful.

Please regularly check your email box (especially the junk mailbox), and reply us before the deadline assigned.

How will the fieldwork placement be arranged?

The placement will be arranged by the Department. Students will have to indicate their choices and the department will try to map the placement settings.

Full-time students will have the placement in 1st year’s Summer Break and 2nd Year.
Part-time student will have placement in 2nd Year and 3rd Year respectively.

Do you offer Part-time programmes?

Yes. MSW offer both Part-time programme (3 years) and Full-time programme (2 years).

Will I be a Registered Social Worker after finishing the programme?

Yes, this programme is recognised by Social Workers Registration Board. MSW Graduates are eligible for professional registration as the Registered Social Worker.

Can I apply Course Exemption?

Students may be granted an exemption of up to one core course only. Please take note that undergraduate courses are not comparable with TPG level courses and will not be accepted for course exemption.

Will the course be held in On-line study mode?

This course will be conducted in Face-to-face mode, especially MSW programme would have placement programme. Online study mode is not likely to be held unless the pandemic situation got worsen. The University would have rights on final decision on the study mode to be held throughout the study period.

Is accommodation available for me on campus?

Residential Halls are mainly for undergraduate students. Full-time postgraduate students are eligible to apply for accommodation at a monthly rental charge for a single room in a number of designated halls. For details about housing for postgraduate students, please visit the website of the Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) at www.cedars.hku.hk.

Are there any financial aids or loans for this programme?

Hong Kong residents may apply for an Extended Non-means-tested loan (ENLS loan) from the government’s Extended Non-means-tested loan scheme. Please check for more from the Government Student Finance Office (SFO) https://www.wfsfaa.gov.hk/sfo
